Twitter Suspends Account That Has Been Impersonating President Putin for 4 Years

Twitter just released a statement that they have suspended an account that has been posting as Russian President Vladimir Putin for 4 and half years now.

They said the suspended comes based on information from Russian officials.

We suspended @putinRF_eng for impersonation based on a valid report we received from Russian officials. Our impersonation policy can be found here: https://t.co/PIBC4nGI8H

As it appears, the Russian government did not know about this since the account has been operating and posting updates as President Putin.

UPDATE: This is even more interesting & hilarious than it seems at first glance! Somebody was apparently impersonating Putin, on Twitter, for 4.5 years, & they did such a good job that the Russian government just noticed now 😆🇷🇺💩 https://t.co/Bo4d5k6hrG

This is Vladimir Putin’s official account 😆🇷🇺💩 We would like to issue the following official statement in response to this development: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA #CyberWarCon

There is another account in the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin with over 2 million followers. Guess what, it is not verified.

Obvious followup question: Is the @PutinRF account real? It’s not verified either. The @PutinRF_Eng one was basically just translating the @PutinRF one into English… This is genius. Somebody got up to ALL kinds of shenanigans with that account, you know it… IMAGINE THE DMs!!
