The Relevance of Marriage in Our Society

Marriage as an institution is the coming together two consenting adults to build a home, raise a family and contribute to the procreation, development, contribution and most importantly add value to the society.

Marriage as an institution is the coming together two consenting adults to build a home, raise a family and contribute to the procreation, development, contribution and most importantly add value to the society. The marriage institution of course, in Africa, involves the coming together of two families (extended) to support the couples to build a home with other secondary benefits that go with it.

As much as various precedents have made it be a turn off for many people especially the women, it does not rule out the beauty of it and the benefits and relevance of it. As an institution set up nobly in Scriptures and has been in practice in modern day civilization of man, a marriage built on the right values can offer the following benefits.

  • National growth and productivity: Human capital and populati0n increases because people procreate in marriage. It is in a marriage that young people and children are equipped with the right values from their parents and close-knit family ties. The home is the foundation for nurturing children beyond what the nature of genes and family history might be. A family might be known for some traits of many generations but a family formed through marriage can nurture them to something different and better than the past.
  • National Cohesion: Countries are known to be made up of different tribes and races of people who largely bear animosity for one another. Beyond the ones caused by religion, the differences in race and backgrounds have caused greater damage to building nations with collective visions. With the encouragement of marriages beyond tribes and races (inter-marriage), countries can form stronger bonds with their various constituent elements. The marriage between the Yoruba and Hausa or Igbo can help build bridges of trust, understanding and appreciation of different culture other than where each person comes from.
  • Support Systems: It is the coming together of two people that grows to become the coming together of different families and much more. Even though the extended family offer huge benefits, the immediate family offers even much more. A family brought together by marriage support each other, encourage one another, when friends disappoint and life hits one harder than he/she can take; family is there to support cushion every effect. Many people raise money for their businesses from their family.
