- The defunct Republic of Biafra’s flag is based on the Pan-Africanist teachings of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).
- The red, black and green which were first used by Garvey’s organization symbolize a common ancestry and political aspirations of all black people around the world. Kenya, St. Kitts and Nevis and Malawi are some African and Caribbean nations that adopted variations of the flag.
- The red represents the blood that links all people of African ancestry, and bloodshed in slavery and liberation struggles around the world. For Biafra, it represented the bloodshed in the pogroms.
- The black for Biafra means a connection to souls of years past.
