Michael Cohen Admits to Violations in the US Elections

President Donald Trump’s long-time attorney Michael Cohen has admitted to making a hush payment to Adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal “at the direction” of then-candidate Trump.

In agreeing to a guilty plea and 3-5 year sentence, Michael Cohen did not particularly name the candidate but rather described it as ‘an unnamed candidate’. He did not also name the women in question whom he paid the monies. The details shared so far might be pointing to Daniels and McDougal.

According to Michael Cohen, “I participated in this conduct with the purpose of influencing the election…”

In describing the President he said, “individual 1” as a co-conspirator – alleging that he acted “in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office”. (The National)

In his plea, Michael Cohen agreed to being guilty of  ‘tax evasion, one count of making false statements to a financial institution, one count of willfully causing an unlawful corporate contribution, and one count of making an excessive campaign contribution.’ (Fox News).

He could have gotten sentence of up to 65 years but he accepted not to challenge any sentence that falls within 46 to 63 months.

He will be sentenced on December 12.

On the part of President Donald Trump, his attorney Rudy Giuliani said, “There is no allegation of any wrongdoing against the President in the government’s charges against Mr. Cohen. It is clear that, as the prosecutor noted, Mr. Cohen’s actions reflect a pattern of lies and dishonesty over a significant period of time.”

Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis responded to the client’s plea as well. He said his client took this path, “so that his family can move on to the next chapter.”

“This is Michael fulfilling his promise made on July 2nd to put his family and country first and tell the truth about Donald Trump,” Davis added. “Today he stood up and testified under oath that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime by making payments to two women for the principal purpose of influencing an election. If those payments were a crime for Michael Cohen, then why wouldn’t they be a crime for Donald Trump?”

President Trump responded to this in his usual way, describing himself as America’s favorite President.

A report by Raw Story says that President Donald Trump told his attorney Guiliani that even though the development is not his fault but he has put his son Donald Trump Jnr in legal jeopardy.

“A lot of what Trump is doing is based on the fact [that] Mueller is going after Don Jr.,” the source said. “They’re squeezing Don Jr. right now.”
